CARTE D'AFRIQUE DIVISEE EN SES PRINCIPAUX ETATS .A rare and highly decorative 18th Century copper engraved wall map of Africa by the Abbe Clouet. .The four sheet map is surrounded by a stunning rococo border with numerous vignettes from African history and myth. Among them the first commercial contacts of Europeans with inhabitants of Guinea. Discovering and Christianization in the Congo, the siege of Tripoli, the foundation of Carthage, the defeat of Hannibal by Scipio Africanus and conquests by the Greeks, Romans, Vandals and Turks. Each has a short text in French and Spanish. The map was originally published both in Paris and Cadiz, the present example dates from circa 1785. A very desirable item. Measures 960 x 1220 mm.
