VAN DIEMEN'S ISLAND OR TASMANIA

A highly decorative map of Tasmania issued by John Tallis, probably one of the best known map-makers and publishers of the 19th Century. The maps were published circa 1850 and are considered the last series of decorative maps of the world, Contained within an elaborate border the maps are generally decorated with vignettes and scenes depicting particular views and  local inhabitants. The present map of "Tasmania" has a number of vignette views including one of Hobart town and a Tasmanian Devil. The map was drawn and engraved by John Rapkin while the illustrations are drawn by H. Warren and were engraved by J. Rogers.

 Measures approx. 340 x 245 mm. A good example. See photo for condition.
